Metal Conservation

Overview

The Metal Conservation Division focuses on the scientific examination, documentation, condition assessment, and conservation of metallic cultural heritage objects and archaeological artefacts. Treatments address corrosion, tarnishing, surface deposits, mechanical damage, and structural deterioration. NRLC has developed internationally recognized methods for the stabilization of bronze disease and high-lead bronze objects, which have been adopted for the conservation of bronze artefacts. Appropriate mechanical and chemical cleaning methods are selected based on the composition and condition of each object.
