Analytical Division
Overview
The Analytical Division is engaged in the scientific examination, characterization, and analysis of cultural heritage materials to support their conservation and preservation. The division employs advanced analytical techniques to investigate the composition, structure, material properties, and degradation mechanisms of archaeological, historical, and other cultural heritage objects. Through instrumental analysis and interdisciplinary research, the division provides scientific inputs for the identification of materials, assessment of deterioration, and evaluation of conservation treatments. Its activities contribute to the development of appropriate conservation strategies and evidence-based approaches for the long-term preservation of cultural heritage.
Research Areas
The division undertakes specialised research and applied studies in the following areas:
- Archaeometallurgy — study of ancient metallurgical practices, manufacturing technologies, and material characterisation of cultural metallic artifacts
- Corrosion and Coating Studies — investigation of the corrosion behaviour of metals and alloys, and development and evaluation of protective coatings for conservation purposes
- Scientific Analysis of Cultural Artifacts — elemental and structural characterisation of metallic objects using advanced instrumental techniques to aid conservation and authentication
